“We like to open stores where we like to go” Nicky Zimmermann, creative director of Zimmermann’s stated at Paris fashion week. Founded in 1991 by Nicky and her sister, Simone, the company has grown to become one of Australia's most successful brands.
Within recent years, Zimmermann’s has expanded its stores beyond Australia to other parts of the world. Nurturing a strong presence in the European market, the brand has already outgrown its Paris location, and is soon expected to open up a store in Florence, Italy. Ironically enough, the company was continually expanding even with a three year travel restriction (in Australia) due to COVID-19. When it came time to ‘get back out there,’ Nicky knew she wanted to do something big, and a Paris Fashion Week debut made perfect sense.
In Paris, Zimmermann debuted its SS23 collection titled ‘Wonderland.’ This collection has sentimental value to creative director, Nicky, as it was inspired by stories that her grandmother used to tell her based on the Edwardian roller coaster located at Tamarama Beach in Sydney. The roller coaster spanned the entire length of the beach, 262 feet long to be exact.
Zimmermann took inspiration from this story, focusing on carnival and beach images from that time period. Most of the collection consisted of pastels, warm oranges, sunny yellows, metallic golds, muted rust, and ecru. Floral patterns, imagery, and typography from the 1900’s were widely implemented into the collection as well.
During the show, special Australian natives such as Naomi Watts, Kylie Minogue, Rose Bryne, and more narrated personal memories of times they went to the beach in hopes of connecting with the audience. Watch part of the show and listen to their stories here!
The 31 year old company is beloved by many big names such as Katie Holmes, Margot Robbie, Beyoncé, Kendall Jenner, and more. Now with Zimmermann on many people’s radars, we’re expecting to see and hear more about the brand in the future.
